Keeping our local area clean, tidy and welcoming is something that benefits everyone. Clean streets, parks and public spaces help create a stronger sense of pride in our communities and make Bromley a better place to live, work and visit.

The Reform UK Bromley Branch – Keep Bromley Tidy Programme is about taking practical action in our own communities. Reform UK members are taking part entirely out of our own goodwill, giving up our time to help keep our borough looking its best.

We will be out several times each month across the London Borough of Bromley, helping to tackle litter and improve the appearance of our local neighbourhoods. We will be visiting different parts of the borough, including the Beckenham & Penge constituency, where we expect to carry out many of our clean-up activities.

This programme was introduced to our branch and put into action by Bromley Branch Vice-Chair Lou Bartholomew, who has helped turn the idea into a practical community initiative.

We believe that keeping Bromley clean is a responsibility we can all share. By volunteering our own time and working together, we can make a visible difference to the places we call home.

Beckenham deserves a high street that is thriving, welcoming and safe.

Our local shops and independent businesses are at the heart of our community. They provide jobs, services and a reason for people to visit and spend time in Beckenham. But businesses are facing growing pressures from rising costs, changes to business rates and the continuing challenge of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

Shoplifting on Beckenham High Street is a serious concern for local businesses. Repeated thefts can mean significant financial losses, higher security costs and increased pressure on hardworking shopkeepers and their staff. Nobody who runs a business should feel that theft is simply something they have to accept as part of doing business.

At the same time, businesses are having to contend with changes to the business rates system and the financial pressures facing the high street. The Government’s changes to business rates and reliefs mean some businesses face higher bills, adding to the pressures already facing our local shops.

That is why we need to back our high street — not burden it with more costs while businesses are already struggling to keep their doors open.

But backing our high street also means making it safer.

Residents should be able to walk along Beckenham High Street, visit local businesses and enjoy our town centre without worrying about crime or anti-social behaviour. Shopkeepers and their staff should be able to work without feeling that criminals can act with impunity.

Police visibility matters. A strong and regular presence can deter crime, reassure residents and businesses, and ensure officers are visible and accessible when people need them.

We are calling for more visible policing and a dedicated police team for Beckenham Town, focused on tackling shoplifting, anti-social behaviour and other crime affecting our high street.

Beckenham already has a local Safer Neighbourhoods Team, and the Metropolitan Police identifies retail crime and shoplifting as a priority for the area. We believe Beckenham needs a stronger, more visible and dedicated presence on the High Street.

Backing our high street means backing the people who work there, the businesses that invest there and the residents who use it every day.
